This is a quick walk through on how to use both SPY and IMON under the Turnkey3 version of MVS3.8J to obtain emulated consoles where you can view the consoles and issue console commands.
The audio was recorded using a logitech noise suppressing headset, which unfortunately does not in any way suppress white noise but seems to amplify it. I am afraid you will have to out up with the background hiss.
Whether SPY and IMON option O display anything on their console display depends on your configuration. Some of the more recent distributions like to assign a console only to the hercules command line window leaving empty displays for SPY and IMON. If that happens to you you could try adjusting the console settings in your hercules config file to the below, only adjusting device entries for those provided with your distribution as the releases provided by different people are configured to use different devices.
# 3270 consoles on 010 and 011 # 009 is used by hercules console interface, without the -C # at the end of the device a telnet session needs to be # started to it # 01F is a telnet hardcopy interface # note 30E is a also defined in MVS sysgen for TK4Rob as # a console printer but leaving it out of hercules.cnf # causes no issues... but some distros use that as the # hercules console interface instead of 009 0009 3215-C 0010 3270 CONS 0011 3270 CONS 001F 3215
