C64 playtime

Playing with C64 emulators again. Still haven’t decided which one to use.
FRODO compiles under Fc14, Vice does not. However VICE is available as a binary from RPMFUSION repositories for FC14 anyway which does work.

Under Linux, my preferred OS, both Frodo and Vice have such small display windows as to be almost unusable.
Don’t have a copy of Frodo for Windows so no comments on that.
Vice under Windows you can double the screen display size (only double, still a fairly small display area) which makes it more usable for typing/viewing. However ‘physical’ joystick support in Vice is only available under Linux, have to use keyboard emulation under Windows. So with Vice you can play a game with a joystick under Linux (but not be able to see the C64 screen clearly) or run it under windows where you can see the screen clearly but have no chance of playing any of the old games without a joystick (keypad just is impossible; actually I can’t even get the ‘keys’ version of the joystick to work yet).

But hey, I’m interested in programming an usefull software right, not games.
Well one game, I really want to play BCs Quest for Tyres again, but that definately needs both a large clear screen and a joystick, bummer.

Anyway, most of the C64 archive sites unfortunately seem to contain only games. I did find some compilers and database software for the C64 at http://www.haddewig.de/nogames64/ but unfortunately the ones I have attempted to run, while running fine, are not english versions. So, to be usefull I might have to write my own stuff; which of course would be a bit pointless.

It is certainly distracting me though. It’s all coming back to me. I have programs doing loops, prompting for input, writing records to/from virtual disk, lots of pretty on screen colour changes all going. Despite being pointless its still interesting and bringing back memories.

May have to keep looking, I still want to play BC again.

Lots of C64 games available at c64g.com (don’t go to c64db, you have to register there). Many at gb64.com as well.
And for those that remember the GEOS operating system thats still available at http://cbmfiles.com/geos/index.php
